According to Japanese media reports, a major Chinese electric two-wheeled vehicle manufacturer will enter the Japanese market in November. The first batch of models will be priced at approximately 210,000 yen, about 30% cheaper than similar Japanese products. With a maximum range of over 60 kilometers on a single charge, they can meet daily commuting needs. This entry timing coincides with Japan's implementation of stricter motorcycle exhaust emission standards starting in November, under which manufacturers will stop producing old models—creating an opportunity for new entrants.
Japan's two-wheeled motor vehicle market once enjoyed a glorious era, but now its sales are declining due to factors such as a declining birthrate and aging population. Driven by the concept of decarbonization, the market is shifting toward electrification. In 2024, new electric two-wheeled vehicles accounted for 8.5% of the global two-wheeled vehicle market, and this proportion is expected to rise to 18.8% by 2035.
However, Chinese electric two-wheeled vehicles face challenges in the Japanese market. Local Japanese enterprises are also actively promoting electrification transformation, investing heavily and setting sales targets. If this market entry achieves good results, it may have a significant impact on Japan's electrification transformation strategy.
